So I don't know if this is possible in excel, but I'll give it a try. I'm building a list of people that fluctuates in number of people and would like for it to total the cells filled. If a name is removed from the list, the value should reflect that.
I have tried looking around how to do this, but am unfamiliar with Excel terminology to find what I'm looking for. To repeat, I would like to total a list of names into a number.

Hi and welcome.
Do you mean you want to count how many names are in the list?
If so then the below will assume the list is in column A.
=COUNTA(A:A)
If there is a header so your data looks like:
NAME
Mary
Mungo
Midge
Then =COUNTA(A:A)-1 will account for that.
