Right Click context recently changed by MS Update - Can I reverse?

A recent MS Update appears to have changed the context menu in Excel 365. Right clicking a cell used to bring up a menu that had a box at the too with various format tools including Format Painter that I use frequently. That box now has much fewer choices which do not include Format Painter. Can this be fixed / changed?

Re: Right Click context recently changed by MS Update - Can I reverse?

I don't see any changes in recent updates. What have you updated from?

When I first copy a cell, all of the paste and paste special (including paste format) options are there when I next right-click. I don't think that I have ever seen Format Painter on a right-click context menu in Office 365, but then I have never needed it because of the other paste options. To use Format Painter, click on the call to be copied, then on the Format Painter icon on the Home ribbon, then on the cell to be copied to.

I don't recall format painter either.

The option for merge and center (unmerge) is gone. I have used that one often to unmerge cells.

I don't recall which update it occurred in.

Edit BTW no I don't know of a way. I am following this thread because I want the answer, too.

I still get the format box, complete with Format painter & Merge & Center with 365

That's the Paste Format icon, not the Format Painter - not quite the same thing. The Paste Format icon also appears in my screenshot.

If you're talking about the mini toolbar at the top, then File - Options, General section, check the 'Show mini toolbar on selection' option.

The Format Painter is the paintbrush icon in the mini toolbar at the top.

Checking, or unchecking that option makes no change for me when right clicking a cell.

It doesn't for me either, but I don't have the problem and it's the only setting related to that toolbar, so I took a guess.

Although, re-reading the original post, it seems the toolbar is still there, just with fewer options.

    [Just being pedantic, but ...]

Your screen shot shows two icons: the one with the paintbrush is keep source formatting, the other is match destination formatting: https://support.office.com/en-us/art...c-42e8f83ffe71

The format painter icon only appears on the Home ribbon: https://wmfexcel.files.wordpress.com...at-painter.png

    [/End pedantry]

Re: Right Click context recently changed by MS Update - Can I reverse?

You're looking at the wrong thing. Fluff's screenshot includes the mini toolbar above the context menu, and the bottom right icon on that is indeed the Format Painter.

Ooh, yes - I'm sorry, I didn't spot that! That menu box still appears for me, but with no format painter.

No, I think he's seeing the same as me. I wonder if this is an insider issue? Dave and I are both on the insider programme - are you?

No, I'm on the Monthly Channel.
Why would they change it for Insiders?

I'm on the Insider channel - 16.0.12425.20000 32-bit - and it's the full toolbar for me. But of course, not everyone gets the same updates at the same time.

I've checked mine today - completely up-to-date. Version 2001 - build 12425.2 and several zeroes.

Same here but that still wouldn't mean we necessarily had the same features available.

    I'm confused ...

Do you have the same info as me (see above)?

EDIT: Yep, you're right. So, how are you getting the context menu box with the format painter??? Talk us through the steps.

Yup. If you click on your About Excel button, you should see the full version/build number which I'd say will be the same as the one I posted.

I've just been looking through the recent fixes/features list, and there's nothing there about changes to the mini toolbar.

Yes, I realised. So how are you getting the format painter to appear on the context menu? Specific steps?

Just right-click a cell, and it's on the end of the mini toolbar (not the context menu).

That's the same as me, so rules that out as a reason.
So it seems as though it must be something to do with the insiders program.
