How to change font for cells in existing excel sheet but only for further inputs to it?

I received an excel sheet half-filled by my friend. I want to add my inputs to it. However, I want it to look distinctive. Since there are many such cells, selecting them and changing the format is tedious and also prone to make mistakes.

Is there a setting in excel that allows me to change the format for all the empty cells once for all?

You should select all the cells which are filled in and those (blanks) that you expect to fill in, and then press the F5 (GoTo) key. On the pop-up you should click on Special, and then on Blanks and click OK. Then you could apply the format that you wish (e.g. yellow background), and this will be applied only to the blank cells that are selected.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks, Pete. It did help. I am extending this question to a further level. In some of my cells, he has input "?" symbol which also needs to be filled by me. Is there a possibility to add that to my selection apart from blank cells?

After employing Pete's solution you could leave all of the cells selected, whether filled with values or question marks or unfilled, and then apply conditional formatting with the rule > Format only cells that contain > specific text > containing > ?
Providing that you leave the ? in the cell after filling, the cell will remain highlighted.
If the ? is removed then you would have to manually highlight the cell, however, since the cursor will be inside the cell after filling, there should be less chance of a mistake.
