    Help with quiz scoring system

    Hi all

First time poster and very much an excel novice.

I know how to use a few basic formulas but more complicated functions elude me so far so I thought I would ask for help with something that feels a little more ambitious before I get in over my head.

I'm working on making scoring sheet for a quiz, where the answers are submitted online via a survey website from which i can then export the answers as an excel document. My next task is to find a way to easily and quickly mark the text anwers (up to 100 submissions of 40 questions) and I was hoping to find a way to automate this in excel.

What i envisage in my head is a sheet where i can paste in the answers generated from the survey website and which would then be recognised as right or wrong based on some kind of conditional formatting, which i know how to do.

My question is, is there a way to then use that conditional formatting to tally up the amount of correct or acceptable answers a player has and give me a numerical indication of their score? So if player A has 5 questions which fulfill the conditions to set off the formatting then somehow their score would be totalled up as 5. Ive attached a sample workbook which I hope shows what i want to achieve.

Could anybody point me in the right direction to achieve this?

    Thanks everyone.

    Welcome to the forum.

By conditional formatting, what do you mean? Formulae cannot use formatting to return values.

If you mean conditional formulae, then get tem to return 1 or 0, and then simply use the SUM function.

Just seen the attachment - you will need to add the conditions to formulae rather than formatting rules. I have to say that you will be very lucky indeed if the basic rules you've set up actually cope with all scenarios!

There are lots of online quiz websites that will collate and mark quiz answers for you based on rules you set up - one of these may be a more sensible option for you. You would just need to set up an account - many have free options that would be enough for your needs.

For that, you have to define criteria first.
How to read what is corrected / fulfill answer? With your sample their is no any logic.

    Hi avk

Thanks for your response. The logic in the example given was in the conditional formatting which i was attempting to use as a sorting method, but i've now realised this wont work as excel cannot accept formatting conditions to return values from formulae.

I have now created a working version which does what I need to using a combination of IF and IS NUMBER functions to express the data input in to numbers which i can tally.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Going to mark this as resolved.
