    Need to calculate discount amounts

    Hi,

My scenario is one where we know:
    • Item Cost
    • Cash on hand
    • Tax rate
    • Total Due

I need to make the Total Due match Cash On hand via adding in a discount amount (to be supplied by Excel) taking into account that the item cost will change, and so will the tax. So for example:

    Cash on Hand 414.46

    Item Cost 841
    Freight 0
    Tax Rate 6%
    Tax Before Discount 50.46
    Total Before Discount 891.46
    Discount 450
    Item Total with Discount 391
    Tax with Discount 23.46
    Total Due 414.46

Can you please help me setting up the formula to obtain the discount amount? I'm not a power user, but can follow most supplied formulas and steps.
    Thanks very much!

I believe the easiest way is to use the built in Solver.

Thanks. Looks complicated, but I'm playing around and trying to understand it. Appreciate letting me know about this feature.

Re: Need to calculate discount amounts

Algebra might be simpler. If I follow the calculation correctly, total due is calculated as
total=414.46=(cost-discount)*taxrate+(cost-discount). Simplify to total=(cost-discount)*(1+taxrate) and solve for discount. Put that formula into B8
