# How to correct a NAME error when trying to calculate percentage with IF formula

1. ## How to correct a NAME error when trying to calculate percentage with IF formula

Hi all!

I have a spreadsheet that tracks annual competencies for my staff. I have three ways to demonstrate competencies. Class, walking rounds, and in-services.
Not everyone has to complete every competency. So I have formulas entered to show NA for those staff that do not need certain competencies. I will go in the spreadsheet and enter an X once the competency has been completed by those that need it. The cells are blank if the competency is needed but not completed. I also have formulas to calculate the total competencies due and total complete and the percentage complete.

What I am trying to do, is make a formula that shows the percentage complete for each type of competency. I started in row AF and I have gotten a part of the formula correct, however I am getting a NAME error for those staff that do not require the competency to be completed. My goal is to get the totals in the green cells at the bottom of the spreadsheet to show 100% when all of the required staff have completed all of the competencies for each respective section.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Your formula is using slanted quotes. I have no idea how you were even able to type those in.

Formula:
`Please Login or Register to view this content.`

In Excel formulas you must use plain old straight quotes

Formula:
`Please Login or Register to view this content.`

Do a global find & replace to fix it.

To resolve the #NAME error, try this formula in cell AC4 and copy down:
=IF(AB4=0,"",AB4/4)

It's subtle, but there is a slight difference in the quotation marks between this and your original formula - which I think is what was the route of the error.

Does that answer your question, or is there something else that you need to calculate the totals at the bottom of the page?

Thank you for your help. I entered the formula and all of the values that return are zero and in one row the values are all just blank.

So I need a percentage complete for each individual person for each kind of competency and then I will total the entire staff in the green cells at the bottom.

I think I can figure out my green cells, I just cannot figure our how to get the individual percentages for each kind of competency.

For example, Wilson should be blank in AB, AD and AF, because that person has no mandatory competencies required. She has NA all the way across her row.

Wooten in AB should be 33% because he has one of his 3 competencies complete for cell AB (which refers to G-K)
Wooten should have 100% in AF because he has all of walking rounds competencies completed (w-z)
and he should have 0% in AD because he has not attended any class competencies (M-v)

There is no Wilson or Wooten on this sheet. You only have first names.
