When I type "0" in front of a series of numbers the "0" disappears

    i.e. - When i type0714it converts it to 714.

How do I make it so the "0" will be displayed?

Thank you in advance for your help.

go to Format|Cells and choose Custom from the Number tab and then enter 0000 in the Type field.
Where there is a will there are many ways.

First, format the cell as text, then edit it.

Another method is to apply custom number formatting, if you want all cells to have 4 digits. The custom format would be 0000.

    Enter as

    '0714

    or

    format cells first as text

    or

    enter with a space e.g
    0 714

    or

    format cell as

    0###
