Double click formula to follow link?

    Greetings:

How do I set up excel so that when I double click a formula that references a cell in another file, it opens that file? In my previous job, my excel was set up that way so I could easy follow formulas around. In this excel that I have, when I double click the cell, it just opens that formula for editing.

    Hi ChrisF79,

I use this a lot myself, I have a summary workbook with formulas to closed workbooks.

The way to get this to work is to go to Tools > Options > Edit and uncheck "Edit directly in cell". The only problem is that if you have a comment as well as a formula, it will open the comment instead. To get over that you could put a "floating" comment using Data Validation, so when you double-click the cell the linked file opens and also displays your comment.

    Hi to All,

In Excel 2010, go to: File > Options > Advanced > Untick the option for Allow editing directly in cells.

    Good Luck!
