Pasting text with line breaks into Excel 2000?

    Hi,

Is it possible to paste text that has line breaks into Excel 2000?

    For example:

    Blah
    Blah2
    Blah3

    I've tried format/cells/alignment/word wrap and Edit/paste special=>text and Edit/paste special=>unicode text

Is this something that this particular version just can't do?

    Thanks

edit: Sorry, forgot to add that I want it to look like a spreadsheet afterwards, without all the cells being deformed by the largish quantities of text that I want to paste in :-)

If you want line breaks within a cell, you ALT-Enter. Is that what you are looking for?

    Not really.

What I'm trying to do is paste largish amounts of text into cells - specifically with a view to automatically uploading them into wordpress (there's a plugin that does this)

The problem is that these blocks of text have line breaks where there are new paragraphs, and this 'deforms' the cell for want of a better word - the cell extends the length of the text, and the spreadsheet is no longer a neat spreadsheet with lots of small identical cells.

What I want is the normal view of a spreadsheet - clicking on a cell reveals the full content of that cell (for editting)

I've tried pasting text in that has NO line breaks and it works perfectly. It's the line breaks that are making the cells resize.

Can you zip up an example? How long is "longish"? Excel won't extend a single cell across columns unless it's merging cells on you. I am using Excel 2000 so if you upload an example of your text with line breaks also, I can try pasting it into excel and see what happens on this end.

You need to format the cells without wrap text(Format Cells Alignment tab). That should clear it right up. The text will carry over into the cells to the right unless there is something in those cells.

    Hmm.

If I understand you correctly I still haven't been able to get it to work.

By default the cells are set without 'wrap text' and I tried pasting into a cell and it didn't make any difference. Then I tried another cell with 'wrap text' ticked, pasted in, again no difference - the text increased the size of the cell.

It might be that when you paste it in with the line breaks it defaults back to Wrapped text which means you need to format the cell after the fact. I simply took your example and unchecked wrap text and it worked.

Maybe paste as text (making sure it's not already set to wrap).
