Unhappy ranking employees by seniority date

    Hello,
I am trying to rank employees by seniority date in column A with dates that I have entered in column I. The employees are grouped by their title. Some employees may have the same seniority date. I would like them to share the same ranking number. I tried using the Rank function but I do not understand the function variables. Please help

So the employees with the oldest date would be ranked 1? If seniority dates are in B2:B100 then try this formula in A2 copied down

    =RANK(B2,B$2:B$100,1)

    Thumbs up

Thanks, I guess I didn't really need to add my mock spread sheet LOL! That really helped I just changed the columns and rows to fit my sheet.

When I put the formula in my mock sheet, the formula worked. I am now putting it on the sheet with the real data and its not working. Am I doing something wrong?

Since my dates are in column L my formula looks like this:

    =RANK(L7,L$7:L$10,1)

In what way doesn't it work? Do you get an error or the wrong results?

I am assuming it is an error because it only returns the same formula that I entered. It doesn't tell me there is an error.

If you can only see the formula in the cell then that probably means the cells are text formatted. Try changing the format of the first cell [A7?] to general then, still with that cell selected, press F2 and then ENTER. This cell should now display the correct result, copy down the column

Thanks again for your help. I guess we were posting simultanously.
