    Question Advance lookup function

    Hi,

    I have the following table:

    Month Date Ending balance
    January 1/10/2008 $10,000.00
    1/15/2008 $7,500.00
    1/20/2008 $5,000.00
    February 2/20/2008 $8,000.00
    March 3/5/2008 $6,000.00
    3/10/2008 $4,000.00
    April 4/20/2008 $12,000.00

I need to create a formula that will pick-up the last ending balance for that particular month. For instance, January = $5,000. February = $8,000, March = $4,000 and Apr = $12,000

The problem is that the number of rows for each month can be just 1 item or can be as much as 3-4 items/balance. Is there a way that I can make use of a formula to be able to pick up the ending balance for that particular month.

Thanks for any input you guys may have.

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

Assuming your dates are in column A and your values in col B. Build a list of month ending dates starting in say D1. e.g. 31/1/2008, (sorry, just realised your from our former colony across the pond, make that 1/31/2008, 2/28/2008, 3/31/2008) etc. Now in E1 enter:

It's good as long as you don't have a 12-month gap in transactions.

    Using Richard's setup

    =LOOKUP(D1,A$1:B$100)

I think I did not quite explain my situation and I actually might have omitted something in my case problem. First of all, how do I get to paste like a picture in the thread to show my excel table??

Everyone would prefer that you post a workbook.

    Hi,

Rather than paste a picture, (see the recommendations section of the forum rules), upload a workbook, or at least a representative sample of it if it's a large one.

Actually, here is more realistic scenario to my problem. Unfortunately, there was no date column, it is just line items and I wanted excel to pick-up the last balance prior to the next item (Asset column) in this case. Can anyone help me figure out? Please see attached file...

    A B
Asset Ending balance Hotel A $5,000.00
    Hotel A $10,000.00 Restaurant B $8,000.00
    $7,500.00 Church C $4,000.00
    $5,000.00 Building D $12,000.00
    Restaurant B $8,000.00
    Church C $6,000.00
    $4,000.00
    Building D $12,000.00

I can't find the attached icon...????

I have attached the file, can anyone see it? Pls provide me with some suggestion as to how I could have the formula read or pick up the last balance. THanks!

If you correct column A to not have blanks, then you can use this array formula in F1 and copied down:

    =INDEX($B$2:$B$8, MATCH(2, 1/($A$2:$A$8=E1), 1))

... or this non-array formula, which I learned from DLL here recently:

    =INDEX($B$2:$B$8, MATCH(2, INDEX(1 / ($A$2:$A$8=E1), 0), 1))

    SHG,

U r the man!! It works. However, I was just wondering is there a way to solve this if I do not have to repeat the name on the blank cell?? I just hate to change some other formula as it was designed with the blank cell. Pls advise.

    Hello,

I am trying to figure out how to search a name on a different worksheet and have it display all possible outcomes. Fore example:

My search criteria is in B3- I can type in several letters to start the search
It will search from a list of names on the second worksheet
and return all possible answers in a drop down list. I can then choose one of the items in the list and it will display the criteria I prompt.

So far I figured out how to display the data, however I am having trouble with the search and drop down. Currently this is the search formula I am using: =VLOOKUP(B3&"*",'Open Bankruptcies'!A6:A24000,1,0), however it only allows me to search using the first letter(s) and only pulls up the first hit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Pramila
