How do I link a photo to a cell?

    Hi Forum,
I have used Excel for a long time but am only a basic user (and not programmer). I have googled and tried the inbuilt help without success.

I have a worksheet which is a list of items. Example, trees. Columns describe different properties (ID number, name, height, weight, cost), each row a different tree.

How can I link a photo of each tree to say, the name cell to make it come up? When I insert a photo into a cell, it does not auto size (like in a word table) i have created a hyperlink to a photo in another worksheet (and a hyperlink back to original position). Is there a simpler way, like mouseover and the photo appears (like a note).

Any help is appreciated, I hope I have explained well. best regards Mayday. (I am new to this forum so please excuse my ignorance to formality mistakes I have made)

you can insert a picture in a comment.
    1.insert coment
    2.view comment
    3. right click on the comment then right click the grey border of the comment(not in the comment itself)
    4.click format comment
5.choose the colours and lines tab
    6.click the color drop down
7.at the bottom select "fill effects"
    8.click the picture tab
    9. click select picture button
    9.choose pic from wherever
    10 click all the ok's
now you should have the picture in the coment so when you hover it should pop up

Thanks very much MartindWilson, works perfectly.

Is there anyway that the pictures could be elsewhere in the workbook and the whole thing saved as one? I imagine if the picture location changes or dissappears the linked pic / comment would stop working.

    Happy New Year. Mayday.

nope it doesnt, it gets embedded in the work book itself. just to make sure i did one from mypictures folder and then i deleted the picture from mypictures and it was still in workbook.

    Hi martindwilson,

You're right, just checked it on another machine.

Is there a way to make comments field autosize to the picture? or at least maintain aspect ratio. I've tried a few different settings but haven't nailed it yet.

    Thanks again, Mayday.

only way i can see is to edit comment then drag it out to approx correct ratio then save. it will keep the setting.

Hi, that's what I've done and then copied cell inc comment to keep comment filed size (all my photos are same size) and then edit text in cell. I tried a variety of "lock aspect ratio" and Relative to original size" but no luck. I'll stick to how I'm doing it unless someone else knows a more elegant solution. Thanks again, It's looking good. Mayday.
