Don't press enter!
Click the tick in the formula bar instead that will allow you to see results of formulae, updating etc

what I want to do is put a fig in a cell A and press enter. That fig will now be used to compute a fig in cell B. If the fig in cell B does not tally with a fig in cell C I then what to put a new fig in cell A. This will be an irretative process until I get the correct fig in cell B and I want to put new numbers in cell A as fast as I can hence I don't want to move away from cell A each time I enter a new number. Hope that makes sense
hold ctrl when pressing enter
Windows 7 using Office 2007 & 2010

There's also a setting in > Options, Advanced, Editing options and there's a check box, the default is set to move down after enter. The other options are to move left, right or up. If you uncheck the default option, so that the options are now greyed out then go back to your sheet, when you press enter you'll stay in the same cell.
only downside to this as opposed to using ctrl + enter is that you are changing the Excel setting as opposed to your sheet setting, so you'll need to change it back each time you use it or all your sheets will have the same actions on enter, ie not moving to the next cell
