deleting input but not losing data

I have three cells, one for input of daily cash receipts, one for checks and one for credit cards. The total is linked to another sheet. How can I clear the input from these three cells to re-enter new data the following day, but not lose the previous total?
    Thanks
    Steve

You will have to cut and paste special as value the cell with the total in it to another cell.

Thank you for the help. It will work, but I was hoping that there may be some way to simply clear the input cells on one page ( which will of course also clear the cell with the total sum), but then not lose the 'sum' data that was linked to the second page. Is this possible?

    Thanks,
    Steve

Where there is a will there is a way. If you could post an example workbook showing what you have, and what your intended outcome is, it would greatly increase our chances of coming up with a solution. Are you trying to create a running history of totals on the second page? How long do you want to keep the "sum" data?

Re: deleting input but not losing data

Once again, thanks a million for sticking with me on this ....I'm trying to help a friend set up a simple way for her to track the weekly income of her salon. For accounting purposes, she need keep only the week total, but for her personal interest, she wants to see each days receipts by cash, credit card and check. At the end of the week, the total of all those is to transfer over to a second spreadsheet to be kept as a single number. She does not want/ need 365 days of individual data with three subsets.

I set up a very simple 7 column x 3 row grid; at the end of each row, the week's total for each of the income options, and below that column is the cell with the full week's combined total. It is that total that is linked to the second sheet. The problem is that when the 7x3 grid is cleared of content at the end of the week to start anew, it also creates a zero in the cell with the total sum and therefore since still linked to the second sheet, removes the preeceding sum and creates a zero there as well.

I guess the better question is: is there a way to link not to one cell, but to a full column of (52) cells and have them populate in order without erasing the preceeeding entry when the daily entry grid is cleared at the end of the week?

    Thanks
    Steve

So what you want to do is not possible as far as I know. Your intended results sound like a data table with X amount of days worth of data in it. In my opinion it sounds like you need to use the built in form entry tool and just filter the amount of data you want to show in the table. If you could upload a workbook with your desired results, it would help tremendously to show what exactly you need.

It won't let me run the macro, despite changing the settings in the trust center. It says the VBA macros are corrupted. I'm in territory here above my head... try to send again or is there something I should do? Thanks

It may be a compatability issue.

    Try one of the following.

With the original attachment, right click the "Click to update" box and select assign macro, there should only be one choice so click this ("Update_Takings") and so if the problem is solved.
    OR
I have attached the same worksheet here but in the xls format.

    Hope that helps.

The best way is to record all income in one Table with the dates to the left. Then you can use a PivotTable to display the results, use the Group feature to display by week's or Month's, Quarters & Years. Another advantage is that you can quickly add a PivotChart for the data
    Hope that helps.

Thank you, Roy. I'm learning as I go and was contemplating the manner you suggested with Pivot tables, but just wasn't at that point yet. DaveH9 was able to send a macro to me that does exactly what I needed.

Roy.. I'd like to mark this as 'solved'. Its been more than 2 days since the original thread started and the rules say to ask a forum administrator for help in such a case. Can you do that for me? Thanks, Steve

To do that, you have to 'edit' your first post, go to 'Advanced Editing' then beside your post title, choose 'Solved' from the drop down menu.
