    Conditional Formatting question

    Hi,

I'm just learning excel (2010) and am having trouble with conditional formatting. I have a file keeping track of my golf scores, one column has my score and the column next to it has the winning score. I would like to highlight values in the "my score" column when it equals the corresponding value in the "winning score" column.

    Thanks,
    Hawkeye13

    Re: Conditional Formatting question

Hi Hawkeye, welcome to the forum.

Let's say your scores are in A1:A10 and the winning scores are in B1:B10. Select A1:A10 and click Conditional Formatting > Highlight Cell Rules > Equal To...

Beneath 'Format cells that are EQUAL TO:' type

    =$B1

Then click the drop-down next to "with" to choose a pre-defined or custom format.

    Hope that helps!

    Re: Conditional Formatting question

    Thanks Paul.

edit: I marked as solved before I could get home to try it out. This didn't accomplish my goal.

I would like each row in column C to be compared to the same row in column D.

I added a column E and used the formula =IF(C2=D2,"Win","") to make it easy to see at a quick glance which games I won. I'm not sure if it's possible to accomplish the same thing by highlighting the games in column C like the first two? If not with conditional formatting maybe highlight all scores in column C with a single value "Win" in column E?

    Thanks again,
    Hawkeye

    Re: Conditional Formatting question

Follow the same instructions I provided above, but change any reference to column A to column C, and any reference from column B to column D. If that's not working, please post a workbook, not an image. We can't tell where things went wrong from an image.

    Thanks.

    Re: Conditional Formatting question

Same issue as before, it highlights the values in column C that match D2, I'd like Cx to be compared to Dx (not D2 everytime).

    Disc2011.xlsx

    Thanks

    Re: Conditional Formatting question

    Your conditional formatting formula is

    =$D$2

Remove the $ between the D and 2.

    =$D2

The $ before a column or row reference makes it static. Select the range of cells and adjust the formula and it works fine.

    Re: Conditional Formatting question

Thank you, I didn't notice the difference in my formula.
