Transferring information between two sheets with a different layout.

    Hello,

Sorry if this is utterly basic, but I can't quite work out how to do it easily. I need to fill in some missing urban population figures for various countries and various years in a spreadsheet with about 500 rows. The columns are 'country name' '3 digit code', 'year' 'urbanpop' and 'pop', with countries having one row for each year missing either pop or urbanpop

I also have a seperate sheet from the World Bank, with urban population figures for each country and year combination, but laid out differently - so each country is a row, and each year is a column. I want to insert the information from the second sheet into the right spaces in the first sheet, using the two keys of year and country code which are shared between the two sheets. Is this something I could do with VLOOKUP or something similar, or do I need to Transpose some of the data or something like that?

    Thanks for any help!

    Hi

I think you need Index / Match.
Take a look at the attached workbook, which hopefully mimics what you have.

That's exactly what I have, thanks. I think I see how that syntax works, I'll try and get it to fit my sheet.

Edit: Works perfectly, thank you very much.
