    Cells "whited out"

I have a very basic spreadsheet in Excel 2010 and approximately 1/3 of the data cells have a problem when entering data and clicking on them. The cell selected in addition to the cell above are whited out. This is a data integrity problem because the person entering data does not look and memorize, (or print), adjoining cells to know if data has changed in the whited out cells. At times, I have seen as many as 8 adjoining cells whited out. The adjoining cells always have data in the proper cells after data entry – I just cannot see if the data has changed due to the white out condition.

I have checked the conditional formatting and I don't see anything there that would be causing this issue.

Is there something I can do or is this normal for Excel?

Attached is a sample of what I was talking about. When you click in the cell, the cell above it whited out.
