Dependent Drop Down Lists, or VBA Combo Box?

    Hello,

I am struggling with a spreadsheet I said I would make to help elementary school clerks. I have seen parts of my issue posted in various places, but I haven't been able to find how to tie it all together.

I need to create an Elementary School Scheduling Grid. I need to be able to
    1. Select the Grade Level.
    2. (*The selected grade level needs to only populate that grades' course numbers in the list drop down in E2.) Select the Course Number
    3. And cell E3 be populated based off of the course number selection
    4. And cell E4 be populated based off of the course number selection

I have attached a spreadsheet and I have two populated worksheets. One worksheet has the lists of information.

What do I need to do? Please help! Thank you so much!

Hi, i have updated your sheet for the first entry.
Added name for Grade number, used this with data validation for dropdown list

Added Name for K Number range
Used this with data validation for dropdown list
then used vlookup to get the K name and course size

you will need to copy these to your other cells and make various adjustments for rows, columns etc
    Regards
    Sean

Re: Dependent Drop Down Lists, or VBA Combo Box?

    Sean Thomas,

Thank you so much for your help! It has saved me so many hours!

I have updated 1st grade on the second worksheet. What do I need to do to make the course number list dependent upon the grade selected?

For instance, if I choose K for kindergarten, I only want the clerks to have a list of kindergarten classes from the second worksheet. The same for first through fifth grades. That way, they don't have as long a list of course numbers to scroll up and down.

Thanks again. I can't tell you how much you've helped me!

Here's a similar approach to Sean's but he course # is a dependent drop down based on the grade take a look and see if this will help.

Tom, this is good too. Thank you. It does help to clarify it better like that. Is there a way to only show Kindergarten courses if the Kindergarten grade level was selected?

Your way does help get there as it puts it in order of the grade level, but I was hoping to help the clerks out and only show them the courses for the selected grade level. That would provide a way to prevent errors and help save the clerks time as well.

If it's not possible, then this will have to work.

I sincerely appreciate the helpfulness of those on this board. This is my first posting and I am just so pleasantly surprised and the helpfulness and quick turnaround this board has provided!

    Thank you!

Yes, I made a mistake in the named range just go to the Name manager on the formulas tab and change the range for the name kindergarten to stop at row 39 and that will fix that list Sorry about that... Can't read today

Sorry I found a few more errors give this file a shot and pay attention to the named ranges and you should be able to add the other grades.

Okay I cleaned up another problem I saw and this one should work without any issues or the need to add excess names. If you see any issues with this one let me know.
