counting unique values beginning with the same character

Hi Guys ...

Have a worksheet 30 columns and 4000 rows. On certain columns i need to be able to count the number of unique fields but the entries have common and unique identifiers.

For Example how can I count the number of fields with PXXXX followed by the number of PYYYY. I only need to be able to count each of these unique P numbers once.

To best describe or illustrate your problem you would be better off attaching a dummy workbook, the workbook should contain the same structure and some dummy data of the same type as the type you have in your real workbook - so, if a cell contains numbers & letters in this format abc-123 then that should be reflected in the dummy workbook.

If needed supply a before and after sheet in the workbook so the person helping you can see what you are trying to achieve.

Here you go. In colum I, you will find identifiers beginning with S but have unique numbers after the letter. I need to count those distinct cells only once yet count how many times columns B and C are associated to one distinct identifier from column I

For example ( How many times does CQ and OE identify with s3768 and then how many times CQ and OE are associated with S2265 )

Have you thought about possibility of using a Pivot Table ?
