    1 Editor, Lots of Viewers

    Hi,

This is probably a very basic question but I have a spreadsheet that lots of people view. The only problem is when I go to make changes I always end up in a read only mode. Is there any way in which i can set the spreadsheet up to be viewed by all but edited by me at anytime?

    Thanks

Thanks. I should have mentioned that there is already a password on the workbook (and I am the only one with the password), but excel won't let me edit if someone opens the spreadsheet before I do. Excel will only give me a read only version. Password or not I can't edit the sheet in read only. Or can I?

perhaps you are only protecting the sheet (locking cells)

Are you sure you are doing this...?

That must be what I am doing. The password is added through Tool, Protection. I'm sorry but the link on your post did not work for me. Do you mind posting it again

    Thanks

Nope..this is what you need to do

Click on File-SaveAs, the Tools button in the top right of the dialog box and select General Options. Enter a password in the Password to Modify box (check the Read-Only recommended option as well if you want) and then save the file. Anyone opening it will then have to enter a password to be able to modify it.
