How to limit the area of Excel sheet only to the area occupied by the data in it?

    Hi Excel Forum,

I have a small Excel dataset, occupying from columns A to J and rows from 1 to 405.

However, I see this file takes a substantial space (43,129 KB) in my disk.

When I hit Ctrl + END keys combination, the cursor straight a way goes to "J 1048575" although my dataset
    occupies only upto "J 405".

Q: I wanted to make my cursor goes only until "J 405" in my sheet when I hit Ctrl + END keys combination because my data occupies only that range.

Could you please let me know how to do it?
    Thanks

    Hi,

Are you sure you meant to write J1048575? Excel 2003 - which you list as being your version - has no way near this many, and Excel 2010's 1 million doesn't make it either.

Anyway, whatever row number it is, highlight all the rows between this row and the last genuine row in your data that you wish to keep. Right-click, Delete and select Entire row.

If Excel gives you a message along the lines of not having enough memory/resource to complete this action, then get back to me and we'll try something else. If, however, it successfully completes this action, then save and exit your worksheet, re-open it and check again with CTRL+END where your last cell is.

Highlight row 406, then hold the <Shift> key down, press <End> once then the <down-arrow> key, and then release <Shift>. Then click Delete, and then save the file, close the file, then re-open it.

    Hope this helps.

    Pete

By the way, your profile says Excel 2003, but you wouldn't have a sheet that size with that version - please update your profile.

    Hi XOR LX and Pete_UK,

Many thanks to both of you. Your suggestion worked.
As you have said I will chnage my profile. Now I am using Excel 2010.

    Thanks again!
