Expand Selection for Custom Sorting

I want to custom sort D9 to the last row in D using a custom filter based on name. I tried selecting all cells and sorting by column D but that failed by saying "this operation requires all merged cells to be the same size."

I currently have this:

I know that for regular sorts, you can use current region as a workaround. I tried the below but it failed to run.
