    Index Fill Numbers

I have a dB with about 500 records and started to write the index number 1 to about 500.

I'm at 145 now and wonder if there is an easier way to do this

If you already have the 1st few entered, hightlight them, then look at the bottom right corner of the last cell. See the small black quare there? click-hold and drag it down as far as needed

    Re: Index Fill Numbers

Good tip Ford but I must be doing something wrong. I see the small black square but my cursor does not change from a cross to an arrow so I can't drag. When I click and hold the highlighted area is removed since my cursor must turn to an arrow to do such a move

Type 1 into a cell and select it. Put your cursor carefully in the bottom right hand corner and it will turn into a +, just like it looks black lines no arrowheads on the ends. Right click and hold, drag the mouse down 1 square and then back up to where you started and release. You should get a context sensitive menu with one of your choices being Series. Choose series in column if you want to number down a column. Choose step 1 if you want to count by 1's and the stop value will be whatever you want to stop at. This is a very fast way to do it.

    oskar,

Here's a very simple macro. I don't know why I never thought to write one like this before.

So select a cell, if you don't type a number in it, the start number will be 1, if you type another number it will start at that number.
Run the macro and you will get an input box asking you for the last number and it will automatically fill in the numbers. It can be modified to step by different numbers if you like, it's set for 1's right now.

    Re: Index Fill Numbers

I know when my cursor turn into a + and that indicates I can drag but my cursor does not turn into + when I point slowly to that square. I'm using Excel 2013 Student. I do however have another square next to the one discussed and when I click it has a context menu with Formating, Charts, Totals, Tables, and Sparklines and within all these are other selections but non is Series. Sorry
