Override formula with a manually entered number, but keep formula stored

I have two different tabs in a workbook: one has all my data using mostly formulas, the other is a copy of the same table, but will be used to enter manual numbers. If there is a number on the second tab, I want it to override the number and corresponding formula in the same cell is the first tab, but not to lose the formula if there is no number entered on the second tab. I realize I can do this with an IF statement on the first tab but am looking for a different way.

Why the aversion to the IF function? That appears to me to be the ideal solution.
