    Lookup values

I have one excel file with two sheets. (sheet information not important here)

Sheet 1 has a list of names I manually input
Sheet 2 has a generated list of names that change hourly

One sheet 1 beside each name I type I would like the cell before the name to check if that name is already on the second sheet and insert a "Y" in the cell. If the name on sheet 1 is not on sheet 2 I would like the cell to come back with #N/A or "NO" or really anything but "Y" or "Yes"

Very urgent and thanks in advanced for your help!

    Re: Lookup values

VBA is not required for this. In Sheet 1 beside the name, use the formula

    Formula: copy to clipboard

Assumes sheet 1 has names in column A, sheet 2 has name in column A. (Sheet information is always important.)

Assumes both lists are in Column "A". Results in Column "B" Sheet1.

    Re: Lookup values

Assuming your manually inputed names on sheet 1 are in column B starting at row 1 and your generated list on Sheet2 is in column B.

Also assuming that you want the "Yes", "N/A" in column A. Put this formula in Sheet 1 Cell A1 and fill down as needed

    Re: Lookup values

    Thank you!

Final question on this. The sheet that I'm checking against (Sheet 2) has every name in column A. The sheet I'm manually entering names will have those names in Column B and Column J.

The names I type will ONLY be partial matches to the names in Sheet 2 - if that changes things up a little

    Re: Lookup values

Sorry John I am not sure what all that is - I'm trying to use the formula that 6String gave me to include partial recognition

This new information changes things a lot. Submit an example workbook which demonstrates what your data looks like

    Re: Lookup values

A better way to put partial would be "contains" - if two people have the same first name I dont want my sheet to get confused
