Help Combining Columns

I have two columns (C and D). C is empty (used as a spacer for printing) and D contains text. I'm writing a macro so I need to do this with VBA. What I'd like to do:

1. Get the width of C and D and add them together (stored in a variable)
2. Change the width of D to the combined value from step 1
3. Delete column C
4. Right align cells in newly sized column C

I'm having trouble with step 1 and 2. I probably could figure out step 2 if I could see the code for step 1. Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction for solving this? Everything I'm finding on Google is GUI and formula based .
