    Excel programming

Actually, this is not a question related to VBA, I have some experience on building VBA based applications in my work place. They are not big tools, but they are very user friendly (most applications only require clicking buttons). Although I am not an IT person, I do programming a little and I like building business applications.

I am still at the beginning phase of my career, by saying so, I would like to go beyond what I know and learn more about building business applications by using other languages.

I did not graduate from computer science major, and I learned VBA by building all kinds of automated tools. I am considering to learn a new programming language, so that I can build better applications, which can handle big data and run faster. I always want the applications to interact with Excel files, because users are comfortable to work on excel files.

Please recommend something for me to learn, I am considering java but not sure if it is a good choice.

Please also recommend some online resources for self learning, preferably video.

    Thanks.

This question what I call is "politics of programming languages" I do not think you can get unbiased and impartial advice. Many people will give you a very conflict advice based on their preference and background. I am also to some extent on the same position as you are. I started learning VBA and thought for long time, I can do programming, but lately realized that VBA is very narrow and limited to Office applications. I have been experimenting with different languages. The majority consensus on learning languages is to start with small and easy languages and progress in to more demanding ones. My preference is learning 2-3 languages at the same time.

To leverage off your VBA knowledge Visual Basic (from MS Visual Studio) might be a good step.

C++ or C# are good general purpose commercially sensible.

But Eiffel is https://www.eiffel.com/ an interesting way to go
