excel 2016 vba locked

Hi everyone,
i'm new in the vba world. i read some pdfs and the capabilities fascinated me so i tried to start programming but i was unable to open visual studio: the icon appears to be grey. i thought that it needed to be downloaded but i cant find anything. what i'm doing wrong

Do you get a 'View Code' option when you right click a worksheet tab name? Alternatively Alt-F11 when viewing a worksheet will/should open the VBA environment.

Out of interest, Visual Studio is a different product altogether and not part of Excel. The VBA environment is built into Excel.

i see it but it's unclickable and pressing alt+f11 it makes the "nothing found" sound

If this is a Windows installation then the only suggestion is to repair/reinstall.

There's no special installation needed for VBA, it's just 'there' when you install Excel. The 'Developer' menu option is hidden by default (You can activate it by going to File/Options/Customize Ribbon and selecting the option in the list on the right but the fact it might be hidden does not stop you getting to the VBA environment as I mentioned before.

If this is a Mac, no idea.
