Hi and welcome to the forum
Can you explain with some examples what data you have and what rules do you want to apply in order to verify it.

I work in a quality department, we use excel spreadsheets to make fail and pass decisions towards our product in final inspection. The spreadsheets we use contain different formulas, and measurements as well. An auditor came and told us that we must verify and validate our excel spreadsheets. I have no idea how to verify and validate an excel file, what I've learned so far
thanks to the research I've done, is that the verification and validation process consist on verifying the formulas used on the spreadsheets are correct, and that our results are in compliance with our formulas.
Thanks
Hi,
Why not ask the auditor what S/HE means by verify and validate and what evidence s/he needs to see that will persuade them that you have verified and validated your data.
Perhaps one way would be to take your data, get your pencil and calculator out and manually work out what the results should be. Then compare thse with the results Excel is giving you.
Hi,
I will ask him when he comes back. Talking about the pencil and calculator, can I make a new excel spreadsheet to check my other spreadsheets? Is that a thing? Is that possible?
Thank you so much for your time.
Hi,
There would be little point in using another workbook with calculations that use exactly the same formulae since it would come up with the same answers and wouldn't be proving anything.
If there are different formulae and different ways ways of arriving at the results using Excel then that might be an option, but in the end I suspect a piece of paper with a series of calculations starting off with simple statements and with each succeeding calculation building on the previous calculations leading to the answer would be the best way.
What are the calculations just as a matter of interest?
I've been intrigued to understand what it is that an auditor is actually looking for to satisfy himself that worksheets are validated and verified. So I googled the phrase 'validating excel spreadsheets'
Among several web sites that I came across was ..this one.
I think this is an excellent starting point and if you follow the bullet points and pay attention to what they describe and then write a 'Verification / Validation Process' document that picks up all these points and builds in your particular formulae and rules, I's be surprised if your auditor could find fault.
Hello Richard,
I appreciate all your help and your time, I followed the link you sent and was pretty useful. I really had a hard time trying to figure out what the auditor really wanted me to do.
When you google validate excel spreadsheets, the info given is not quite clear. But I finally got an example of what I needed. Here's the link so you can check it.
Best Regards,
Andres
