Hyperlink to a post this forum.

Hyperlink to a post this forum.
Up until a while ago I have copied the path (https://www.excelforum.com/excel-pro...cel-macro.html) into a sheet to go back to that post.
At that time it did not have the security "s" in https.
This all worked fine till the security was changed on the forum. Now I get an error message ("Unable to open" followed by the hyperlink)
My mail messages have a mile long address starting with "https://mandrillapp.com/track/click/" and a bunch more.
How would I be able to hyperlink the post again?

Re: Hyperlink to a post this forum. Get URL Link to post, Mail Chimpy Monkies Wonks :-)

Hi jolivanes,
Is the problem the long URL?
I believe there may be a limit sometimes of around 255 characters.
I just measured one of those long “mailchimp monkey” URL links ( https://mailchimp.com ) , which we started using a while back ( https://www.excelforum.com/the-water...ml#post4581916 ) and got around 500 characters

Possibly this Thread might help:
https://www.excelforum.com/excel-gen...le-maps-3.html

_._______________

This is how I get a Link to a post:
https://www.excelforum.com/suggestio...ost-quick.html
( https://www.excelforum.com/tips-and-...ed-search.html )

Here, as example, how to get the link to your post above:
Hyperlink to a post this forum.
Up until a while …….?
Note the 4811440

Thread Post:
https://www.excelforum.com/excel-programming-vba-macros/1213810-hyperlink-to-a-post-this-forum.html

Now modify that to include a
#
and a
post
and finally the
4811440

You end up with
https://www.excelforum.com/excel-pro...ml#post4811440

( P.S. From time to time, the Owners / Tech Team experiment with these things and so occasionally you will get some strange results when attempting to get a URL link which works. For example, sometime I could only get a Link to work if I doubled the last bit like this:
https://www.excelforum.com/excel-programming-vba-macros/1213810-hyperlink-to-a-post-this-forum.html#post4811440\#post4811440

This then sometimes gives you the correct link or even a shortened version.

I am afraid at excelforum you often have to experiment a bit to get things to work… )

Hi Doc.AElstein
In the formula bar
https://www.excelforum.com/excel-pro...his-forum.html
is the problem.
Previously I copied that, pasted it as text in a cell, highlighted the text and hit enter to get it hyperlinked. Not anymore.

https://mandrillapp.com/track/click/...xcelforum.com? + 3 more lines (total close to 500 characters)
works as advertised.

If there is no simple way, I just wait for an email notification.
Thanks Alan (Is that spelled right?) and a Happy and Prosperous New Year to you and yours

Re: Hyperlink to a post this forum.

Hi
Yes I am Alan. Best wishes for you in the New Year too.

I did some experimenting:
Different URLs
I paste into URL bar, https://www.excelforum.com/excel-programming-vba-macros/1213810-hyperlink-to-a-post-this-forum.html PasteInFromURLBar.JPG https://imgur.com/Sn5hV4F
and it still works:

Paste into cell,
Then hit return, PasteInFromURLBarHitEnter.JPG https://imgur.com/uC69bD3
That works

Also this , https://mandrillapp.com/track/click/30095444/www.excelforum.com , “works” as hyperlink : MonkeyShortWorks.JPG https://imgur.com/IOXcyCY
But I get not valid when I try in URL Bar
MonkeyShortWorksButNotValidURL.JPG https://imgur.com/FDamdDJ

But that is not the full URL:
My Email: ChimpyMonkeyWanksInMyPostbox.JPG https://imgur.com/xczC7VO
URL is on two lines.. This: https://mandrillapp.com/track/click/30095444/www.excelforum.com? is not the URL . ( I think you know this ) ……”….. + 3 more lines (total close to 500 characters)
works as advertised
……” :
The URL is
Please Login or Register to view this content.
In my browser URL Bar, ChimpyMonkeyWanksInURLBar.JPG https://imgur.com/Elq30f3 that works,
( but changes to https://www.excelforum.com/excel-programming-vba-macros/1213810-hyperlink-to-a-post-this-forum.html
ChimpyMonkeyChangesInMyURLBar.JPG https://imgur.com/ffiGF0D )

In Formula bar
In my Formula Bar , I paste in very long ( 465 Characters : ChimpyMonkeyWanksWith465Chrs.jpg https://imgur.com/4grogqx ) in a cell : ChimpyMonkeyMakesBigWanksInMyFormulaBar.JPG https://imgur.com/fCH1dx1 https://imgur.com/Wurg4Ue

But if I click on cell it will not work because only 255 characters are allowed for URL thingy in Excel cell:
If you click on https://mandrillapp.com/track/click/30095444/www.excelforum.com?p=eyJzIjoicUhOeUs4eGJHXzFPTWN3emxMcEVnTGhPa1VjIiwidiI6MSwicCI6IntcInVcIjozMDA5NTQ0NCxcInZcIjoxLFwidXJsXCI6XCJodHRwczpcXFwvXFxcL3d3dy5leGNlbGZvcnVtLmNvbVxcXC9leGNlbC1wcm9ncmFtbWluZy12YmEtbWFjcm9zXFxcLzEyMTM4MTAtaHlwZXJsaW5rLXRvLWEtcG9zdC10aGlzLWZvcnVtLmh0bWxcIixcImlkXCI6XCIzNzc3ZTM2ZjQ3OWI0ZDAzOTY2ZjQ2OTFkN2UxYWI3MlwiLFwidXJsX2lkc1wiOltcIjMyOWFjNTFiN2UzZjFmYTA2YjVjMWUxZTg2NzI1YmRiZTk1OGEzM2FcIl19In0 in cell A3 and it will not work

This is workaround from davesexecl / tony h here: “…….Excel will allow longer addresses created……through VBA……”
https://www.excelforum.com/excel-gen...ml#post4311170
https://www.excelforum.com/excel-gen...ml#post4313942

So this is how workaround works: ( Workaround is for URL > 255 characters )

_ 1 _ Put this code in Worksheet code module

Please Login or Register to view this content.
_ 2 _ Now paste in https://mandrillapp.com/track/click/30095444/www.excelforum.com?p=eyJzIjoicUhOeUs4eGJHXzFPTWN3emxMcEVnTGhPa1VjIiwidiI6MSwicCI6IntcInVcIjozMDA5NTQ0NCxcInZcIjoxLFwidXJsXCI6XCJodHRwczpcXFwvXFxcL3d3dy5leGNlbGZvcnVtLmNvbVxcXC9leGNlbC1wcm9ncmFtbWluZy12YmEtbWFjcm9zXFxcLzEyMTM4MTAtaHlwZXJsaW5rLXRvLWEtcG9zdC10aGlzLWZvcnVtLmh0bWxcIixcImlkXCI6XCIzNzc3ZTM2ZjQ3OWI0ZDAzOTY2ZjQ2OTFkN2UxYWI3MlwiLFwidXJsX2lkc1wiOltcIjMyOWFjNTFiN2UzZjFmYTA2YjVjMWUxZTg2NzI1YmRiZTk1OGEzM2FcIl19In0 in cell A3.

_ 3 _ Now click on cell A3.

It should now work! By me it does work sometimes. But sometimes it does not work. When it does not work, I get the error “……konnte nicht geöffnet werden. Die angeforderten Informationen können nicht heruntergeladen werden. …………. could not be opened. The requested information can not be downloaded……” SometimesItDoesNotWork.jpg https://imgur.com/05yI9ka

I do not know why it does not always work. But it did work sometimes for me.

Hope that is little help.

Alan

Re: Hyperlink to a post this forum.

Edit: I just noticed something strange... after playing around with those workarounds… suddenly no clicking on hyperlinks in Excel or Word worked, and I continually got that last error….
“…..…. could not be opened… The requested information can not be downloaded……”

Also my Excel Files where I had been experimenting could not be open without being repaired … the repair report said something about having to remove some XML hyperlink …

I restarted Office… and now all is well .. and that last workaround of mine is working constantly and consistently… ..

Re: Hyperlink to a post this forum.

Hi Alan.
I have not had the problem of having to repair but it also is not back to simply clicking on the hyperlink.
It is not a problem that needs to be solved right away so I'll keep on plugging away at it.
Thank you very much for your help.

Hi jolivanes,
You are welcome, let us know if You solve the problem… it is good to know what things go on with the Forum software**

Just a last couple of things I noticed that might be related directly or indirectly to your problem..

_1) An Old Problem cropped up again - Something was noticed a while back.. ( https://www.excelforum.com/the-water...ce-2016-a.html https://www.excelforum.com/suggestio...ml#post4641605 ).. and I noticed it going on again just recently.

_ 2 A new Thing I noticed recently.
I observe currently that if I click on a hyperlink to a excelforum Thread in Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel more than 3 times, then the 4th times fails with the error I gave in a previous post in this thread
( https://imgur.com/05yI9ka ….”… could not be opened… The requested information can not be downloaded… ……” )
( It makes no difference whether they are the same link or different ones. )
Links to any other Internet sites function normally without limitations
Then I have to restart Office to get a link to excel forum to work by clicking ion a hyperlink.
Then…
if I click on a hyperlink to a excelforum Thread in Microsoft Word or Miicrosoft Excel more than 3 times, then the 4th times fails with the error I gave in a previous post in this thread
( https://imgur.com/05yI9ka ….”… could not be opened… The requested information can not be downloaded… ……” )
( It makes no difference whether they are the same link or different ones. )

Then
… etc… etc…

So , basically I can have three successes at linking to somewhere at excelforum by clicking on a hyperlink before I have to restart Microsoft Office , and I can have three successes at linking to somewhere at excelforum by clicking on a hyperlink before I have to restart Microsoft Office, and then I can have three successes at linking to somewhere at excelforum by clicking on a hyperlink before I have to restart Microsoft Office, and then I can have three successes at linking to somewhere at excelforum by clicking on a hyperlink before I have to restart Microsoft Office
….etc…

** my best guess would still be that someone at excelforum Management or TechTeam is fiddling around with the software.
Thois thread could be good placed moved to here… , https://www.excelforum.com/suggestions-for-improvement/ , ( but I doubt anyone from excelforum Management or TechTeam would take a look.. ) But someone else might pop by who has experienced something similar…

Good luck
