Excel -- Prevent users from Locking file stored on OneDrive

    Dear all,

I have a macro enabled file which is saved on OneDrive.

Goal is to not let users lock the file saved on OneDrive.

Currently, while the workbook is being opened by any user, we see that there is prompt which says " Edit Workbook " on the top.

Could you please suggest, how we can disable/close " Edit Workbook " prompt when the user opens the workbook saved on drive? This should not allow users to see that option.

    Thanks,
    Vinod Krishna

    Hello,

if you are on Excel 2010, as your profile says, then there is no way to change the behaviour you describe. With Excel 2010, the first user who edits the file will lock it for all others. If they need to run the VBA, they will need to be in edit mode, so they have to click "Edit Workbook" in order to more than just look at the grid.

The most recent version of Excel, delivered with the Office 365 subscription, now has co-authoring enabled in most channels (except for the semi-annual channel). That means that multiple people can edit an Excel workbook at the same time, on any device, including desktop computers (and macs) and the workbook will not be locked (of course, VBA code will not run on Excel for mobile or Excel online).

The only situation where the workbook will still be locked is if someone with an older version of Excel (which does not yet support the co-authoring) edits the workbook.

I'm not sure if this answers your question, but not locking a file in OneDrive is only possible with Excel from a 365 subscription.

Re: Excel -- Prevent users from Locking file stored on OneDrive

Currently, all the users are using Excel 2016 with Office 365 subscription.

However, the file becomes editable and can be locked by a user.

Could you please let me know to prevent the same?

    Thanks,
    Vinod Krishna

Re: Excel -- Prevent users from Locking file stored on OneDrive

If you are on the semi-annual channel, the new Excel feature to co-author with Excel desktop will not be available to you.

It is a matter of your Office channel and version.

Co-authoring with Excel on the desktop is available if you see the "Auto-Save" slider in the window title bar and it is active and set to "on". It can only be "on" if the file is saved in OneDrive for Business or SharePoint Online, AND the computer loading the file has the correct version of Excel 365.

If you do NOT see the Auto-Save in the Excel window title bar, then you either do not have an Excel version that supports co-authoring or the file is not stored in a location that supports co-authoring.
