    Abbreviate words

Hi all ( I hope I have placed this request in the correct area)

I have a file that has 106 rows of data, the first column is AOK it is the second column that has quite a few different sentences that I would like to shorten.

Once I see how to do it I will try to tackle all the rows

The file is attached for perusal

Sample 1 is as they are now.

Sample 2 is how I would like them cut down to

    Re: Abreviate words

    Morning, Pete!

This is quite a big ask, and will almost certainly require VBA, if it is possible at all. As with any task like this, there will need to be a set of parameters - rules - defined by you about how to change the text, and that set of rules will need to cover everything. So, for example:

    Excel 2016 (Windows) 32 bit
    A
    B
    1
    digital dig
    2
    modulation mod
    3
    full carrier F/carrier
    Sheet: Sheet1

In other words, you will need to be able to teach Excel your logic. The substitutions could be done with Find & Replace, or the SUBSTITUTE function, but trimming the extraneous text will be much trickier, because again you are going to need Excel to understand the logic you'd apply.

Hopefully someone versed in VBA can advise whether or not this is feasible.

To be honest, doing 106 rows manually with a mixture of F&R and text cutting would probably be faster than building and testing a VBA solution - if it were me, I'd just get stuck in. It won't take more than half an hour maximum.

No - we never delete threads unless they are SPAM. It remains here, just in case someone can help or as a warning to others that Excel is not human.

It perhaps ought to be moved to the VBA section - shall I do that?

    I've moved the thread.

You are aware that 'bonjour' cannot be used at the end of a conversation? It is a greeting, not a farewell. 'Salut', however, can be used in either case.

    Re: Abbreviate words

Pete - please answer the question asked. YasserKhalil may be able to help you. He will know better than me because he knows more about VBA.

Having said this, if YOU can't explain the logic, then nobody can programme Excel to be able to implement it - that's the bottom line.

You will need to explain the logic of what you are discarding completely, too.

    Re: Abbreviate words

    Hi all

After a conversation with the webmaster for where this information was to appear they do not need the descriptions only the first lot of numbers and letters only.

    Less work for me now.

Thank you for taking an interest

I thought you were the webmaster, Peter - I've just been looking at your site, as I build a few myself in my free time.

Please mark this as solved if you need no further help.
