    Lookup search and convert

    =IFERROR(LOOKUP(1000,(SEARCH('Test range'!$A$6:$A$22,D4)),'Test range'!$B$6:$B$22),"")

I am using this equation and it works fabulously, except that I would like to be able to use a real range instead of $A$6:$A$22 and $B$6:$B$22. The reason is that I am realising that I have other combinations to add, but don't know how many.

One way around it is to simply increase the range and input blanks for the lookup and output, but is there a more elegant method?

Take a look at Excel Tables. Excel Tables "know" how big they are and you can use the table header names in the formulas.

Here is something to get you started with tables: http://www.utteraccess.com/wiki/Tables_in_Excel.
One spreadsheet to rule them all. One spreadsheet to find them. One spreadsheet to bring them all and at corporate, bind them.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but a sample spreadsheet is more likely to be worked on.

Thank you. Will practice the table format on a sample spreadsheets. The header is great because it will eliminate the need to specify cell references or ranges.

    Thanks again.
