    Template to record clicks

    Hey All
Does anyone have a template that I can use for the below:
I have to do a cost benefit analysis for work to prove a specific task takes too much time.

I need to allow at least 30 users use at once and have results saved in another sheet in the same excel.

I need the users to be able to click a button "START" for example and this records the date and time hit and another button "FINISH" which records the same.

So basically when I receive about 10,000 responses (which will take about 3-4 weeks), I can build the business case and Cost benefit analysis.

    Cheers if anyone can help.

Excel is not well versed to allow more than one person at a time to utilize a workbook.

You can distribute the same workbook to all of the employees, so they each have their own copy ... then when they return
their copy to you, you can consolidate all of the data into one workbook.

I agree with the sentiment that if you want concurrent access, you want a database and not Excel because they do what you want automatically. Having said that, with enough programming, Excel can be made to act like a database for specific applications. This application seems to be simple enough to program.

If everybody has access to the same common drive, you can develop a front-end / back-end type system.

The front end has the buttons and multiple copies can be distributed to the users. When they click the start button, the time is recorded locally. When they click the finish button, the finish time is recorded and both are "transmitted" to the back end to be recorded in a table there.

There is a possibility of a collision, meaning two people trying to access the back end at the same time. This is not likely to happen and we can put code in to check to see if the back end file is open, and if it is wait X seconds and try again. Also put in a loop counter so if Y attempts are made, the program gives up. It should be extremely rare that you will miss data this way unless somebody opens the back end manually and keeps it open.

To make this even less likely, I will probably write the information to a CSV file and have yet another front end import this file for reporting purposes in case you want to snoop in on it during operation.

Besides the Start and Finish Times, is there any other information you would like to collect? I can give you user login ID as well.

I notice that you are using Excel 2003. Is this true? If you have 2007 or later, then I can use tables which will make some of the work easier.

Let me know if you can support the common server (drive), what information you want to track and confirm your office version.

OT: Is today Waterford Day? You are the second person I responded to today from there. If you know Jordan's stop by and say hi to Kate (my wife's sister) and Andy.
One spreadsheet to rule them all. One spreadsheet to find them. One spreadsheet to bring them all and at corporate, bind them.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but a sample spreadsheet is more likely to be worked on.

    Cheers for the replys guys.

So concurrent access is a must as everyone will be doing the same task during the same work shifts.

Everyone has access to the same drive yes.

I envisioned the users loginID , customerID(typed in by the user), the start time and end time been recorded. If we could record the timeframe between both times thats a bonus

I'm on 365 so have the latest Excel.

OK, I do suggest that you change your profile to reflect the versions of Excel you do have.

Here's my offering. It consists of a Front End that you can configure and distribute to the users, a back end that contains the data and instructions in a Word document. As tempting as it may be to want to analyze the data by looking at the table in the back end, I advise caution. You don't want to be holding this file open as people are trying to update it. If you want, I can give you another tool that gets the most current data in another workbook. It will come in as an excel table and then you can build on this book with your own pivot tables or whatever.

Amazing job on that Dflak, exactly what I wanted.
Simplistic for the user and even records the duration as needed.

    Great job, thanks a mill.
If you had the other workbook handy, it wouldn't go stray.
    Cheers
