Excel template on SharePoint Team site now opening "locked for editing"

My company is using SharePoint Team Site and I have been opening templates from my local SharePoint synced folder for over a year.
3 days ago, all the templates we use open "locked for editing by another user" even though only 2 of us access the files and neither of us have them open.
The same scenario happens when using SharePoint web links. Moving the files to other folders makes no difference.
The files, moved locally, open normally.
Does anyone here access templates stored on SharePoint? Your insight would be greatly appreciated
Since the template only "locked" using my macro, I thought I should post it in case it leads somewhere.

I found the cure myself. It was as simple as adding a change directory statement before opening the template and changing the way I opened the template to "Workbooks.Add Template".

This macro locates the most recent version of an Excel template "xltx" file in a folder and opens a copy. It does work well with SharePoint shared synced folders.
