function keys F5 and F8 not working in excel vba macro

I have a new laptop and when I try to debug a macro and use the F8 key to single step thru nothing happens in the macro. A panel pops up to the right of the screen entitled "Project" with these options: PC Screen only, Duplicate, Extend and Second Screen Only. I can select "Debug" and "Step Into" but I have to hit both each time I want to step to next line of code. Pressing the F5 key doesn't cause any action to occur. Does anyone know a solution?

The easy & obvious solution is to just read your laptop manual as by default its keyboard not returns functions keys
but special system keys so I guess you should combinate with a prefix key …

Thanks for your reply - I am reading the manual and have not been able to find a solution. Could you explain more on how to combinate with a prefix key. I'm not familiar with that.

Google your LapTop company and search for how to access your function keys.

Some laptops have a" fn" key at the bottom. Which would have to be pressed with the function keys.

If I'm doing a lot of work on a LapTop, I will just hook up a regular keyboard to it.

Thanks davesexcel - I used the fn key with the f5 and f8 and that worked perfectly. Thanks so much!! I also will use a separate keyboard when I use this laptop as it seems so much easier than using the laptop keyboard.
