Perhaps some few words to explain what you want ...!

If it is only APPLE you want to count an immediat solution can be next formula
=SUM(((LEN(A2:C10)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(A2:C10,"APPLE","")))<>0)*1)
Confirm using Control + Shift + Enter for array formula, some curly brackets will appeared at the beginning and at the end

sure....

add all the APPLES appearing in GRADE A,B & C and place the total in H12.
however, the search should be for "APPL*" since there are various types of apples indicated.

not working and i really don't understand it.
i prefer a VBA since this requirement is only a part of a macro. empty cells are deleted etc and when the cells change the formula changes as well. so please assist with VBA.
