Lots of conditional formatting causing issues?

I am making a workbook, some tabs being 40 pages long.
I have a fair amount of VBA, and lots of cells (several hundred) with conditional formatting.
As I buid it, and im getting to the end, I just started to have problems. One problem is when I now go to
change a font, or font size, excel just closes. I went back an tried the same workbook from a previous date,
with less formatting, and it works fine. (Of course the previous worked on workbook has "less" formatting.
So.....
Do I just have "too much" conditional formatting?, Is there a limit?
Any help is appreciated.

In theory, no. However, performance may depend on:
a) complexity of the CF Formulae
b) if the CF Formulae are Volatile
c) if the CF Formulae use whole column references
d) if the CF Formulae are applied to whole columns
