Pivot Table Subtotal Custom Groups

How can I create custom groups of pivot items in one pivot field, then only subtotal the groups (instead of individual pivot items)? in vba

Ended up creating a Helper Column in the source data. I found a way to reference ranges for the selection.group action in pivot tables, but I wasn't familiar enough with the Union reference to fully execute the solution. It ended up being a simple exercise by avoiding the grouping. From there, I was able to use a row field to group the items. I still wasn't able to avoid not having the pivotitems show up, though. In the end, that's probably not what I need anyway.
