Toggle Shape Color

I'm am working to possibly create a dynamic chart where the user will click various buttons or shapes that will add or take things off the chart. And when the user presses that button or shape it will change the color to show its 'On' or 'Off.

So say I have perhaps 7 or 10 buttons or shapes, what would be the best possible way to toggle each shape color 'On' and 'Off'

The idea below is that the script will hide and unhide the column in the data, which will then add or remove that data in the chart and change the shape color. But do I need to have separate 7+ modules, one each for expense, etc?

Is there any way for the code to determine, from the shape being clicked, which column should be hidden?
