Angry Garbage Excuses Not to Allow Macro Recording

    I am sick of it.

I am trying to record a macro, something I have done thousands upon thousands of times before, and Excel 2010 just will not allow it.

I do everything absolutely correctly, and yet, Excel 2010 insists on telling me that I have either:

    1. done absolutely bugger all wrong
    2. have done it correctly but it is not going to allow it anyway
    3. I am conflicting with absolutely nothing which does not even exist.

I am SICK of it. Even the damned program doesn't have a clue what is wrong.

Would someone please help me to fix this before I snap and take a hammer and petrol can to every Microsoft product I own?

    Many Thanks

How would you like us to help? You have given no indication of the nature of the macro you are trying to record or a sample workbook that illustrates the problem.

Re: Garbage Excuses Not to Allow Macro Recording

What do you need to know?

I am trying to RECORD A MACRO.

    That is it.

I do not know how to make it any simpler.

All it is, is formatting, moving columes, renaming columns and so on. It's really very, very simple stuff.

Before I can start recording, I name the Macro, such as:

    _NW_pqrs_wxyz

or whatever I want to call it.

And it tells me that the name I have chosen is invalid because EITHER:

    1. I have done absolutely bugger all wrong
    2. it does not contain invalid characters at all, but they figured they'd randomly add this rubbish to the list anyway
    3. I am conflicting with absolutely nothing which does not even exist in Excel or VBA anyway.

Of course, it will not let me copy anything from the pop-up dialogue box to show you and none of the above are correct, anyway. The closest I have is a Macro called _NW_pqrs_abcd.

So, the way you can help is tell me:

    a) why this pile of nonsense suddenly started doing this;
    b) how do I tell Excel to FECK ARF, *I* am The User and *I* will INSTRUCT IT, THE TOOL, to do what *I* tell it.

I am so frustrated atm. I am not at all well and Bill Gate's Autistic bullshot is the final nail.

The only thing that is different is that I updated Windows 7 HP 64 bit recently.

(NO! I AM NOT GOING TO UPGRADE TO WINDOWS 10. Unless you pay for it for me, and I want Win 10 Executive where I have absolute and total control over the security features and NO MS "Cloud" or data theft. I have backup hard drives).

I want it recorded in my Personal.xlsb and be available to all spreadsheets.

I do not want a "work around" to record it only inside a single workbook. I am only going to run it once on each work book afer I import the data.

Oddly, I can Step Into older macros but not Inspect them.

I says to UNHIDE Personal.xlsb with the UINHIDE command, but OF COURSE, OBVIOUSLY, does NOT tell me where to find that command.

And even when I UNHIDE Personal.xlsb, I get the same wroing error message talling me I have done NOTHING wrong but it will not let me record a macro anyway.

So you have ANY idea what is up with this?

No, the fact I bought Microsoft Office is not the answer (well, it IS, but I cannot use Linux)

    Many Thanks

Re: Garbage Excuses Not to Allow Macro Recording

    DoH!

I just tried again and left the Macro name as Macro1 and it worked.

So, why are Microsoft programmers so dumb and so disconnected from reality that they cannot design an error message that tells us EXACTLY what is ACTUALLY wrong?

I do not recall ever having to do this before.

NONE of my Macros are ever called Macro1, Macro2 etc and they ALL start with undercore.

Now I have to find it and rename it. I can use two Initials and 2 short words separated by underscores AND make it descriptive. I am a human being.

That story about getting lost in fog helicoptering over Seattle, and they write a sign saying "WHERE ARE WE?" and the guys on the roof held up a sign saying

    "YOU ARE IN A HELICOPTER".

So the helicopter pilot knew they were above the Microsoft building.

I really, really don't think it was a joke.

    I think it really happened.

Although I am sure we can all sympathize with times that excel didn't do what we wanted or an upgrade broke something. Unfortunately none of us are from Microsoft as far as I know.

Can you record macros in word?

Anyway if you are confident there is not anything obvious wrong (as you appear to be) you could just try reinstalling excel.
If you want something done right... find a forum and ask an online expert.

I know that, I wouldn't have insulted Micro$loth if this was one of their own boards.

So, how do I change the name of my Macro from Macro1 to the descriptive name I want it to have?

This is why I am quite sure I could give the macro a name before recording it. More complex things I would use VBA.

    Many Thanks

PS You might be able to tell that I spent several hours last night searching the forum and found "solutions" like recording in a single workbook instead of Personal.xlsb. Then I finally crashed and slept for 9 hours, which is very unusual for me.

PPS I have no reason to record Macros in Word

    Hey Shadowblade,

Could it be you already had a Sub (or Module) named what you wanted to call the new one? That might throw an error. Then when you tried to record a Macro called Macro1 and it was a new/unique name it worked?

I remember some changes with the Personal workbook based on newer versions of Excel. Perhaps this link will explain more about it and versions it works with:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...%20locate%20it.

I believe most of the improvements in Excel were to keep privacy and consistency in the products.

I never use underscore in a filename but it looks like they are ok at: https://contexturesblog.com/archives...r-excel-names/

I really like Excel as I keep finding tools in it that make answers easier. You need to watch Flash Fill YouTube videos to see one I just discovered.

No you don't. Except to help someone who is willing to use some of his/her personal spare time to help you.
But as we all know, you can't help those that do not want to help themselves.
    Good luck.

    Re: "_NW_pqrs_wxyz"

When you google the naming of macros, this comes up as one of the rules.
The first character MUST be a letter. But after that, you can use letters, numbers and some available punctuation characters
Looks like all the complaining was meant for the guy looking at you in the mirror!

    Hey jolivanes,

It looks like an underscore is allowed but not in a cls module? See/read https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dot...ng-conventions

Please give me a link to your "must be a letter" ref from above.

    Hi Marvin

at "Excel VBA Macro Naming Rules and Restrictions." about halfway down the page.
    https://howtoexcelatexcel.com/macros...-excel-macros/

This site came up when I entered "excel+naming macros"

    Hey jolivanes,

You are and the website is correct. I just tried to record a macro and gave its name with an underscore as the first character. I got an error. I guess this OP got it wrong when they said they name their macros with a leading underscore.

    Hi Marvin.
Exactly what I was thinking and I was going to mention that in my Post #9 but I said enough in that Post already. No need to stir the pot anymore.
Next thing you know I need to apologize!!!!

    Stay safe Martin
