Matching the values of two tables

I have two tables, one in each different file.

The first table, let's say in clientnumber.xls, contains only two columns, Client Name and Client Number. It's regularly manually updated and has around 1500 rows.

The second table (clientfinal.xls) is more complex, and is the one I want to do the editing it. It contains around 10 columns. Most columns are already filled in, including Client Name, but Client Number is still empty. I have to find and manually input the corresponding Client Numbe by checking the first table. This takes a lot of time and I'm sure there is a better way to do this, but I'm not sure how, so I can't show any code I tried to write.

Any tips or pointers are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Typically, you would use VLOOKUP. I suspect you'll need both files open for the formula to work.

Hey, thanks. I have no prior experience with Excel and jumped straight to VBA a few months ago. Can you give me an idea how this is done with VLOOKUP?

Some options. Pick any one. I'd suggest VLOOKUP is the simplest.

Create the formulae with the Source file open. You will see:

If you then close the Source file, the formulae will look like this:

    Formula: copy to clipboard

Change folder, sub-folder, sheet name, columns, etc as required.

If you have Excel 365, why are you using .xls files?
