Excel crash on loading .NET framework

    Hi All,

I have a file containing quite some macro's as well as some PowerQuery connections to other Excel files.
This file is created for a company which is using it over multiple computers.
On 7/9 computers this works perfectly, on 2/9 it crashes on start-up.
At the bottom right, I see "Loading .NET framework" and this is loading for +/- 2mins. After that, Excel crashes.

I'm unable to open that file on those two particular pc's. On one of both, I never was able to open the file, on the other I was able to for a while and then suddenly I wasn't able anymore.

After doing some research, I found this has a relation with PowerQuery? Any suggestions on fixing this?
Both Windows and Office are fully up to date, same O365 versions on all pc's.

    Thanks a lot.

Have you tried looking in the Windows Event Viewer to see what (if any) errors Windows might be logging when this happens?
    https://www.pcmag.com/news/how-to-tr...a-event-viewer

Do those machines have at least 4.7.2 installed?

You could try to repair .Net framework using this tool https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...6-c34a2f4b612a

    Hi Jdelano,

Tried to update to the latest version as well as the repair tool but none of it worked unfortunately.

Is there any useful information in the Event Viewer?

The only other things I might try would be:
    • Create a new windows user (maybe the profile is corrupt)
    • run dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and sfc /scannow in a command prompt opened as admin to check for corrupt system files
    • then the nuclear option of a clean install of Windows

I hope the Power Query forum can help you out. Those types of issues are maddening.

Any update/fix? We're seeing this issues on our Windows 11 machines, and no one seems to be able to correct...

Also having this problem. It was running Excel 365 in Windows 10 on a Lenovo T495 when the problem started. It seems to be isolated to my laptop, and happens even with blank workbooks.

    So far I have tried:
    • Repairing .net framework
    • File, Info, Check for Issues/Inspect Document and ticking Custom XML Data.
    • Updated to Windows 11
    • Factory rest of the device (twice), reinstalling windows from cloud and from device.

Every time the same issues presents: Excel works fine until I click 'queries and connections'.

The only potentially useful advice I have received is 'Hardware is probably broken, buy another computer'. We can't afford to replace this!

I manage a small non-profit organization, and all of our project management, grant management, financials, timekeeping etc requires this function. This is the third time in as many years I've had to reconstruct our entire org management process, and now this happens. We're barely hanging on as it is and now I can't even perform basic functions.

I wonder if you download a standalone version of office, like 2019, 2021, or 2024. Perhaps this happened due to an update to 365 (though it works for me, but I have no queries or connections to select from)

The amount of time I'd have to spend figuring out how to do that, seems like a lot to invest in a hunch. What's the difference between doing that and reinstalling windows (that didn't work)? Why do you think that will work? Will the .net framework use a different part of the hardware? It worked with 365 for quite a while before the .net issue appeared for (seemingly) no reason.

Doesn't Windows give you the ability to roll your system back prior to an update so you could test jdelano's suggestion pretty easily? I'm pretty positive I've done that in the past when i was "bugged" out by an update.

Edited to add: I'm sure the IT guy at my company had me do that.

'Pretty easily' might be doing a bit of heavy lifting. We don't have an IT guy, there's just me and I don't have time to do my actual job, much less invest time on a hunch. I can't find anything online to suggest you can roll back to a previous edition by clicking a few buttons. Do you have the instructions your IT guy gave you?

C_hues, your problem may be similar to the OP but in this forum we restrict each thread to be specific to the OP. We do not use it for general discussion of similar problems, even if they seem to be the same.

I suggest you start a new thread with as much detail about your problem as you can provide.

    Administrative Note:

    Welcome to the forum.

We are happy to help, however whilst you feel your request is similar to this thread, experience has shown that things soon get confusing when answers refer to particular cells/ranges/sheets which are unique to your post and not relevant to the original.
