Excel opens all files in My Documents folder

Here's a crazy problem I've never come across before. When I open Excel, it
goes crazy and opens every file in the My Documents folder at once. Anyone
ever heard of this before? There seems to be a default workbook that is
blank except for in Cell A1 it says ".ShellClassInfo". Not sure if the
ShellClassInfo thing is related or just a red herring.

    all the time.

once it finishes, go into tools=>General tab and remove any entry in
    Alternate Startup File Location

or go to the windows start menu and select Run

    enter

    Excel.exe /s

which opens excel in safe mode. Then make the change, and close.
