auto filter row count not working

i have an xlss with 30 coulmns and 4000 rows deep. when i sort using the auto
filter the status bar on the bottom left is not working, it just says filter
mode. on other xlss it works.

The AutoFilter status bar displays the "Filter Mode" message in Excel
