Questions on copying range from closed workbook to active workbook

Hi , I am looking for little Guidance on the best way to copy the range cells for one worksheet (sheet1) (wkbk Is not open) to my current worksheet.
Basically I am using a commondialog to select the the source xls where I want copy all cells from sheet 1 ( orf the source xls) and paste into my active workbook sheets(4).
I have read through few threads on this forum but have a few questions.

    1. Is necessary to open the source workbook I want to copy from- first?
    2. If it not necessary to open the other workbook then how would I do this?

    thanks In advance
