update every cell to reformat?

I have a spreadsheet with one column which has date like
"03/31/1997" for 31 March 1997
I formatted all the cells as "mm-ddd-yy" because I want the data to display as
31-Mar-97 and change to value of "3/31/1997"

I can make this happen by clicking in the cell and going to the value box and pressing enter.

Is there a way to make excel do this to every cell in the column so I don't have to refresh each cell individually 'by hand'

Sounds like you have calculation turned off, formatting whole columns should be an instantaneous change.

Go to:
Tools -> Options -> Calculation -> Check in "Automatic"
