Column headers being numbered, not lettered?

Has anyone seen a case where Excel numbers the column heading instead of lettering them?

    i.e., you'll have 1,2,3,4,5, instead of A,B,C,D,E

If so, what causes this and how is it fixed? This occured on a spreadsheet that was housing an automated data dump written in Java.

    Thanks!!
