xl03 users cannot open .xlsm from XL

    hello all,
I have STF and found nothing, so I thought I would make an account and ask.
    Here is the issue...

We have a few users, all are using office 2003. We have a document that was created in office 2007. The extension of the document is .xlsm. The users cannot open the document from Excel. When they do the get error; file name: File Format is not Valid. They have to go to the drive and the folder then the document. When they do open it, it is a read only file; therefor there are more than one copies of the file out there(which is bad).

What can I do to fix the issues of not being able to open it from Excel and it opening as a read only file?

    thanks for the help

    Re: .XLSM help

It's best to use the earliest version when developing a workbook.

What you can do is download a free converter from here
    Hope that helps.

Re: xl03 users cannot open xl07 files

I've only used it on a PC or laptop not on a network. maybe the converter needs installing to the network.

Re: xl03 users cannot open xl07 files

See the users can open the file created in xl07. The problem is they can not open the file from xl itself. They can go to the mapped drive and click the file and the file converter opens right up. But when the do that the file opens as a read only, ie; xl00000001 or xl00000007. I am wanting to get rid of the read only and them not being able to open the file from xl.

I had the same problem with a macro we used to generate other workbooks and had no problems with it in Excel 2003. When I saved the original macro workbook in Excel 2007, it generated new workbooks that were not functional for Excel 2003 users. Here's how I fixed it:

    1) Saved original Macro workbooks in Excel 2003 format and reran macro that generated new workbooks.

Workbooks now were completely functional for 2003 users.

    Hope this helps someone,
    Justice
