find out previous cell value

Hi,
Iam trying to write a small macro to do some validation in my spreadheet. I tried all possibilities and coul dnot find out anyway to get the following idea. Could be a lack of knowledge in the VBE macros. Anybody could help in this regard would be really help for me.

I want to compare the old value and new value(value that changed by user) in a cell . If Old (previous) value is greater than entered value , then need to display a message.

Means - Let us assume the cell (A1) has a value '1 Jan 2009' and user changing that value to '31 Dec 2008' , Then I need to display a warning message. My dilemma is I am not able to get the old(previous value in the cell) to compare with new value ....

Please throw me some light on this..
